They are not quite the same. USB 3.1 is a new technology standard whilst USB-C (officially “USB Type-C”) refers specifically to the connector. The USB 3.1 standard provides faster data transfer speeds thanks to the advanced engineering behind the USB-C port. (USB-C is backward-compatible and also supports the USB 3.0 and 2.0 standards.)
